The annual Vlam Panel Beaters Blood Buddy Memel to Newcastle Walk will take place on Wednesday 9th August 2017
This event, now in its 23rd year is a very popular event in South Africa and attracts athletes from as far as Cape Town every year.
The event started off as a challenge between 11 high school boys and 3 teachers during a camp, it has grown from only 14 people to 2000 people per year.
The event started by Amajuba High School as a fun 55km walk from the city centre of Memel in the East Free State to the school grounds in Newcastle Kwazulu Natal. Today the event has different events as part of the big event. One of those events is the 51,2 km run from Memel to Newcastle and is registered as a qualifier for the annual Comrades Marathon and the Two Oceans Marathon.
This year the event organisers Champ Marketing have included a Relay Run to the event, “ We had a few athletes whom asked us to include a Relay Run, and after speaking to gurus in running, we decided to give it a go. “ explained Christo van der Vyver from Champ Marketing & Events.
The usual 51,2 km Individual Walk and Relay Team will be a big attraction this year and the organisers expect more than 200 teams will be taking part in the event.
The event will be 1,2 km longer this year. The event will start at the NG Church in Memel, athletes will make their way to Newcastle, turn left into Impala, straight to Drakensberg Ave, left into Drakensberg Ave, right into Agate Street, left in to Aquamarine and right into HJ van Eck with the finish point at The Pines Wedding & Conference Village.
A carnival atmosphere will be set up for the supporters, with Treetops Pub suppling drinks and fires for a braai, be sure to bring your family and friends for a fun filled day.
